last words....

On June 19th, I packed myself up as I was staying overnight at the house and then catching a morning flight back to BWI, and the airport was more easily assessable from there.  I booked a roundtrip as the plan was that I would come home, and settle things here.  I had to make new arrangements for Triscuit's care, show up at the office at least a couple of time, and then return on Monday the 30th and stay in the hospice with Tommy through his birthday.  We had set the room up so that I could work from there during the day so staying for a couple of weeks would not be an issue.   Tommy had decided he would see how things went staying overnight without company as a trial run - it was the only night he did because Bryan went and camped out while I was gone.   And so, that night as I left, I hugged my son, kissed him, and.... I remember I asked if he wanted me to sing his lullaby before I left, and he just chuckled and shook his head.  I remember that ...

expiration date

Another post that I don't feel like adhering to the format I have adopted Been having a bit of a rough time this week as the 13th of the month rolled up and past.  It was just two months ago when Tommy was told there was no more hope, when we were told he had 90 days at the most left to him. We've always joked in our family about our expiration dates.  Despite the fact that I decided at a very young age that I would live to be 100, the women in my family haven't made it past 85, men past 72.   And of course, Grandmom Hughes' saying that " tomorrow is promised to no one " is something none of us ever forgot.   But to be told what the limit is on your life was frightening.  By helping Tommy process the news, to talk about what comes after on such concrete terms, I thought I was preparing myself for the inevitable as well.  After all, once the colorectal cancer metastasized to his lungs, we knew that cancer had won - he fought it for 3 1/2 years [ if...

The mushroom cloud over Nagasaki, Japan, on Aug. 9, 1945. Credit...Hiromichi Matsuda, via Shutterstock In some ways, I can comprehend the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima on the grounds that at that time, it wasn't known how devastating such an attack would be.  The second bomb was dropped on another civilian population with the full understanding of what was being done. And so, the United States of America is the only country to have used nuclear weapons to date. Twice. Every citizen should bow their heads in shame and silent apology on this sad anniversary.
