Day 262 - seems like fall may be here

Today is the 3rd day of the 38th week, the 19th day of the 9th month, the 262nd day of 2023, and:

  • Get Ready Day - a day for disaster preparedness
  • Independence Day - Saint Kitts and Nevis from the UK in 1983
  • International Talk Like a Pirate Day - celebrated since 1995, but received a boost from Dave Barry [the comedian] in 2002.  This day is a big deal in Second Life with many themed events and everyone dressing appropriately.  And altho George is a WDW legend, he is also the subject of one of my fav bloggers/podcasters
  • Iota Phi Theta Day - the fraternity was originally established in 1963 at Morgan State in Baltimore, Maryland by 12 students
  • Meow Like a Pirate Day - apparently celebrated since 2002, designed to encourage folks to adopt or foster rescue cats.
  • National Butterscotch Pudding Day
  • National IT Professionals Day
  • National Voter Registration Day
  • National Woman Road Warrior Day
  • Take a Loved One to the Doctor Day
  • and Voyager 1 is 22h 21m 04s of light travel time from Earth
Quote of the day:
"As habit is more dependable than inspiration, continued learning is more dependable than talent."

It is a gorgeous early fall day, with seasonable temperatures and low humidity, the kind of September day that makes you think about apples and pumpkins and fall leaves.   I am working from home today, so I get to keep the windows open and walk out onto the balcony now and then to enjoy the day.  Unfortunately, the drought may mean that trees go straight to brown rather than our usual fall panoply though.

Meteorological fall arrived back on the 1st, and astronomical autumn begins at 2:50 AM EDT on Saturday, but summer-like conditions have been holding on hereabouts and today is a welcome foretaste of cooler weather to come.  Daylight Savings Time holds on until we 'fall back' on Sunday, November 5th though - and I wish there could be more discussion and resolution about stopping this semi-annual clock resetting

The discussion about continuous learning is one that my friend and I often end up wrangling with.  It is her contention that you have to read history, biographies, and actively seek out documentaries to watch in order to continue learning.  It is my contention that any reading expands the mind [well assuming you aren't going down some conspiracy misinformation rabbit hole that is]  and therefore qualifies as continuous learning even if it is fiction [or even worse from her viewpoint, science fiction or fantasy].   She speaks with distain of those who stay glued to the TV for entertainment purposes, and there we kinda agree as I just cannot sit and watch shows, even those I want to see, unless I am not feeling quite myself.  Gone are the days when I could sit and stitch while listening - most stories these days demand that you watch, unlike the earlier days of network TV that was described as "rado with pictures" and you could follow the story without seeing it.  Mission Impossible was the first show that took full advantage of the visual medium, and like the shows today, I could not follow the story without keeping my eyes on the television.

On the other hand, what is wrong with being entertained, especially for those of us who are entering into the fall of our lives?  There certainly is enough to worry about, neh?   If one chooses to spend their laughably scarce 'free time' in being amused, why should they be derided for it?

Speaking of entertainment, Triscuit has been very happily occupying herself finding places to nap.  I didn't get a picture of her sandwiched between the blind and the glass, soaking up those last rays of sun though.

And, for all that she looks so placid and relaxed, notice that as soon as I get up from my workstation and start moving around, she watches me very carefully.   There is no way in hell that she would ever let me dress her up as a pirate!
