Day 148 - a federal holiday
Today is the 2nd day of the 22nd week, the 29th day of the 5th month, the 149th day of 2023, and:
- Ascension of Bahá’u’lláh - observed the 70th day of the year in the Baháʼí calendar
- End of the Middle Ages Day - I was unaware there was an actual date to the end of the Dark Ages, but today marks the fall of Constantinople 570 years ago
- Hamburger Day
- International Day of UN Peacekeepers
- Learn About Composting Day
- Memorial Day
- National 529 Day - a 529 savings plan is a specific kind of savings account to help you save for future education
- National Alligator Day
- National Biscuit Day
- National Coq Au Vin Day
- National Paperclip Day - did you know that paperclips officially come in different shapes? There's Non-Skid, Ideal, Owl, Eureka, Sheet Brass Gothic, Proco, Angell, Utility, Vice, Acme Correspondence, Nifty, and Clippy
- Oak Apple Day - apparently this kind of tree is tied to the restoration of the British monarchy after Cromwell
- Prayer for Peace Memorial Day
- Put a Pillow on Your Fridge Day - no idea why putting linens in the pantry or in or on your refrigerator would bring on luck. Would nicely cool down a pillow on a hot night tho....
- World Digestive Health day
Quote of the day:
"In comparison to emotions, which come and go and sometimes mistakenly lead us into thinking there is danger, values provide a steady hand that reminds us about the kind of person we want to be." ~ Yael Schonbrun, “How to Make a Decision When There Are No Good Choices”
Today's quote dovetailed nicely with the way I started out today's meandering about online by reading an opinion piece that I agree with, but didn't post in social media because I'm tired of the entire subject of the debt ceiling. I was one of those who thought no negotiations and invoke the 14th Amendment was the sensible way to go, and have no idea why that would provoke a Constitutional crisis other than the fact the GOP would wail and flail over it.
While I'm at it, I really deplore the current trend of writers to hide their blogs unless folks are paying subscribers. I first ran into this with JMS who writes extensively, and initially subscribed, and then realized with horror that I could quickly get nickeled and dimed to death by subscribing to those I wanted to read and dropped the subscription. If I was a member of the 1% with nearly infinite disposable income at my disposal, the accumulation of small amounts wouldn't make a difference, but they do to me!
As we go through today, enjoying a three-day weekend [well if you don't work retail that is], the sales, the cookouts, the official start to summer, pause for a moment and remember the cost.
