Quote of the day:

Here is a secret I never have told
Maybe you'll understand why

I can stay young till I die
.”

~ Stephen Schwartz, “No Time at All,” Pippin

They are remodeling the apartment downstairs, and apparently it is quite a task involving the replacement of the drywall and the ceiling.  The workmen are chipping off the old popcorn finish and replacing it with...   well I don't know!  I haven't visited a lot of other apartments so I don't know if we all have the same general ceilings.  The remodeling is rather noisy though.  So far no obnoxious odors have wafted up, altho apparently some of the workmen had to be reminded not to smoke in the apartment.  [I say workMEN because I haven't seen and work women about]

It took a lot to roust me out of the apartment Frank and I had lived in - I lingered there for four years before I finally moved, and I might be there still, despite the obvious deterioration of the area, if my mother hadn't lost her lease where she was renting!

Mainroom at 7 PM yesterday evening
What will be the tipping point here?  I have been at the Enclave since  mid 2007 and in this specific apartment for the past 14+ years.  Since this New York Enclave Holdings LLC took over in 2016, things have definitely gone downhill:  no more locked security gates after 10 PM, no more 24 hour concierge in each building, no more locked parking garages.  The four elevators no longer work consistently [we have just two at the moment] and the management office fails to communicate.   The owner dropped the contract with the DOD to house military and is bringing in waves of Section 8 inhabitants. to fill empty units.  And some of them just do not know how to take care of the property.

And through it all, I have stayed.  Why?  inertia and the overwhelming job of packing ahead is a huge component.   The view from the balcony is also part of how much I like my home.   But I was ready to go a year ago and found that unless I gave up the amunities I want, a smaller apartment would actually cost me the same and it just doesn't seem to make good economic sense not to wait until rents come down a bit [they already are starting to].  But finding the mailboxes open like this is ridiculous.  I have made a formal complaint to the Post Office and opened a ticket with maintenance, because altho I pushed both doors shut, they did not appear to both lock, which means anyone at all can swing them open and rifle the contents of people's mail.  NOT acceptable!  When I lived in Randallstown, because we found the mailboxes were not secure, we rented a PO box at the nearby post office after our first year, an address I kept until I moved.   I really do not want to do that again.

Meanwhile, at work, the long slog through the EOM/EOQ reports continues.

I'll tell you, this growing up stuff isn't all that we thought it would be when we were kids!
