"We'll go down in History as the first society that wouldn't save itself because it wasn't cost-effective."
~ Kurt Vonnegut
I get it - it's summer. It's July and HHH [hazy, hot, humid] weather is to be expected. I'll admit I always find it interesting to have such high dew points in the middle of a drought, but such is life hereabouts. The northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun and the mercury is climbing.
But a simple glance at the facts would indicate that something is going on other than just the normal cycle of seasons, and has been for the past four decades. As early as 1896 [127 years ago]. a Swedish scientist was warning that changes in carbon dioxide could cause the greenhouse effect. As early as 1938 [85 years ago], a correlation between warming temperatures in the Earth's atmosphere and increasing levels of carbon dioxide was established. In the 1950's, scientists started getting seriously concerned. In the late 1980's, global warming was becoming a topic of conversation.
And we have ignored the facts and have just gone on our merry way. Why? Not because we couldn't do anything, but because doing something cost money
It's gonna be a long, long hot summer.
